Cupcakes is Going Green

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

At Cupcakes, we wear organic cotton uniforms, recycle, and use CFL light bulbs in our stores, but we need YOU to help make some of the biggest differences in helping us to go green for our planet.
We’ve always wanted to reduce the number of plastic bags that are being used, not just at our store but across our city.

Did you know:
-Plastic bags are made from natural gas or oil and consume an energy equivalent of hundreds of thousands of barrels of oil a day
-Canadians use 55 million plastic bags per week
-Vancouver City Council is working on a total ban of single use plastic bags (Vancouver Sun, Oct 16, 2008)
-They take about 400 years to decompose
-The litter caused by plastic bags are a serious danger to birds and marine life, and cost millions of dollars in clean up cost from tax payers dollars (San Francisco estimated that they spend $8.5 million dollars annually to deal with plastic bag litter).

So we decided that on Earth Day, April 22nd, Cupcakes won’t use any plastic bags. Instead, we have adorable reusable recyclable bags available for just $2.50, and they are limited edition designs. You can use them to carry all your things around and feel good about helping out the Earth!!

Please help us by starting even earlier than Earth day. If you know you’re coming by, bring your reusable containers to put your cupcakes in, or buy a reusable bag. Together we can help the Earth and make Vancouver a cleaner, greener city for us all!

Thank you!

March cause cupcake – “paw print”

paw print

Cupcakes is excited to partner with the BC SPCA, the British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, for the month of March.  The BC SPCA is dedicated to protecting and enhancing the quality of life for domestic, farm and wild animals in BC through a wide range of services for more than 40,000 homeless, abused, injured and abandoned animals. It is also only animal welfare organization in BC which has the authority to enforce laws relating to animal cruelty.

For the month of March, Cupcakes is proudly donating a portion of the proceeds from every “paw print” cause cupcake sold to speak for the animals and help raise awareness. “Paw print” is a chocolate–vanilla marble cupcake finished with blue buttercream and topped with an edible paw print.
The “paw print” cause cupcake will be sold throughout the month of March at all Cupcakes Bakery locations.
Please visit the BC SPCA website for more

The story of “Denman”

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

When we opened our first location back in April 2002, we decided on an 1134sf location right smack in the middle of the bustling West End neighborhood.
Known for its selection of multi-cultural restaurants, Denman Street was the perfect fit to launch the first ever cupcake shop. We knew that being in the heart of English Bay we would draw from the large crowds of tourists and locals that marched the seawall on the sunniest of days. The store’s popularity quickly grew as word began to spread that there was a new destination for dessert–a pink store filled with brightly frosted cupcakes.  As the lines began to form out the door and down the street, so did the comments.  Onlookers and curious newcomers would walk through the front door to ask us one thing…. “How are you going to survive on Denman only selling cupcakes?”
Now, 7 years later and with a new view of English Bay, Cupcakes opens daily excited to greet all of our customers that walk through the doors craving one of our sweet treats.

For all those who have supported and believed in Cupcakes throughout the years, we have created the “Denman” cupcake for you.

Thank you!!!
