December Cause Cupcake – “sally ann”

December 9th, 2009

sally-ann

The Salvation Army helps provide direct, compassionate, hands-on service to more than 1.5 million people in Canada each year, restoring hope and dignity to the most vulnerable in society. The Salvation Army’s annual Christmas Campaign has grown into one of Canada’s most significant and recognizable annual charitable events.
Founded in 1882, the Army’s goal was simple – to provide spiritual and practical support to society’s most vulnerable. Among various service innovations, The Salvation Army was instrumental, in its early years, in developing the first prisoner parole system and the first Juvenile Detention facility in Canada. The Army was also an early provider of shelter and service to women in crisis and served alongside the Canadian Armed Forces during the Great War and World War II.

For the month of December, Cupcakes is proudly donating a portion of the proceeds from every sally ann cause cupcake sold to help give hope today to the local communities in need. It is a chocolate cupcake finished with white buttercream and topped with a “Salvation Army” chocolate. This is an annual cause cupcake partnership with the Salvation Army Foundation.

The sally ann cause cupcake will be sold throughout the month of December at all Cupcakes Bakery locations. Please click on the “contact us” button to see a list of all of our Cupcakes bakery locations. Also, visit the Salvation Army website for more information on the foundation at www.salvationarmy.ca.

Yum!

Every MONDAY & TUESDAY, if you come in and buy a dozen cupcakes OR 2 packs of our assorted minis, you’ll get your very own tote bag free. We have two really cute designs to choose from — the classic I♥ CUPCAKES bag, or the limited edition “sweet 16″ bag.

October Cause Cupcake- “c-cup”

September 30th, 2009

c-cup_2000x2000

Heather’s mom, Kathie White, has been the friendly voice of the Cupcakes order desk since Heather & Lori opened Cupcakes on Denman in March 2002. During a routine mammogram in June 2007, Kathie’s doctor diagnosed her with stage one breast cancer at the age of 59. She underwent an intensive bout of radiation therapy twice a day for 5 days and is now part of a research study group to help fight breast cancer. Kathie now takes Tamoxifen and will be considered cancer free in 5 years.

October is breast cancer awareness month and Cupcakes is proudly donating a portion of the proceeds from every ‘c-cup’ cause cupcake sold to help fund research for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation BC/Yukon Region and create a future without breast cancer.

The ‘c-cup’ cupcake is a vanilla cupcake finished with pink buttercream and decorated with the breast cancer ribbon in pink fondant. C-cup cause cupcake will be sold throughout the month of October at all Cupcakes Bakery locations.

Also, visit the Canadian Breast cancer Foundation BC/Yukon Region website at www.cbcf.org for additional information.

It’s red and it’s here!!

August 13th, 2009

red_velvet

We are super excited to introduce red velvet CAKE to the Cupcakes family. Kathie, who takes all of your cake orders placed on-line and on the phone, consistently tells us how so many people ask for a red velvet cake, triple-layered with cream cheese. For a long time, we had to say ’sorry, no-can-do.’ However, our talented bake & pastry teams have worked together and have come up with the perfect red velvet cake recipe, for all of your special occasions.

Most popular in the Southern United States, Red Velvet cake can be best descibed as a creamy and decadent cake infused with cocoa and then dyed red to give it its distinctive personality. The most common and favorite pairing with the cake is a cream cheese frosting, whipped until fluffy and white.

Although red velvet cake has been around for quite some time now, numerous legends surround its place of origin, and on its method on turning the color of the cake to its rich, deep red. Some say that during World War II, bakers used boiled beets instead of food coloring, while others claim that the deep red color emerges when mixing buttermilk and vinegar with the cocoa. Whatever the truth may be, there is no denying that over the last decade, red velvet cake has gained popularity among celebrities (Oprah Winfrey is a HUGE fan) and has emerged as a favourite in North American households.

If you love our ‘red velvet’ cupcake, which is available on weekends or by special request, we know you’ll be excited about ordering a cake just like it for your next celebration.

A friendly reminder that when ordering the cake, it is triple-layered, and covered in cream cheese frosting. If you’d like any decoration or writing on the cake, it will be covered in a creamy white vanilla buttercream instead of the cream cheese frosting. If you’re not a fan of cream cheese, you do have the option to have your whole cake layered and covered in the white vanilla buttercream. All cake orders must be placed at least 36 hours in advance.

Look what you’ve created!

You spoke, we listened, and then went back to the drawing board…

At Cupcakes, we trust and care about our customers’ feedback. We have comment cards at every one of our locations and our management team goes through them every week, taking note of your concerns, suggestions and praises. We also take our facebook page very seriously and appreciate all the feedback and especially questions that get posted by our fans every day.

Repeatedly, we hear that our buttercream is too sweet and sometimes too heavy. So, for the last month, we had our bake team at Cupcakes working together to recreate a NEW butter cream recipe. After sampling over 20 attempts we were finally excited about a new swiss-style buttercream. It’s deliciously fluffy, and at the same time, a lot lighter in flavour.

For the entire month of August, we will be featuring our new buttercream on the ‘confetti’ cupcake. This vanilla cake with the NEW white vanilla buttercream, topped with colourful confetti sprinkles, will soon be another favourite amongst our cupcake enthusiasts.

Please be sure to stop by any one of our five locations and try the ‘confetti’ with our new buttercream. We appreciate your feedback, whether it be via facebook, or you can simply fill out one of our customer feedback cards and hand them back to one of our cupcake girls behind the counter. “Because who doesn’t love a cupcake?”
